CLAREMONT — The Occidental men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Rossi Relays hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.
Both teams put together some solid early season performances, indicating the teams are in good shape headed into SCIAC No. 1 at La Verne this Saturday at 11 a.m.
Men's Highlights: Junior Gabriel Barrett-Jackson, a four-time All-American, competed for the first time this season after easing into competition following his soccer season in the fall. He ran a 49.5 split on the 4x400m relay team as the team of he, Nicholas Conklin, Hugh Pegan and Kyle Dalton went 3:19.96 for a third-place finish in the fastest section. Oxy only lost to NCAA Division II Cal St. La and Fresno Pacific.
In the 4x100m, Dalton, Pegan, Chris Rom-Toribio and Keane Collins went 41.91 for second overall in the fastest section of the event. The Tigers beat scholarship schools Cal Poly Pomona, Concordia (Irv.) and Fresno Pacific.
Austin Sankaran, the defending SCIAC Champion in the 10k, led the way for Oxy's distance runners, running 3,000m in 8:55.82 for a win in Section 2 of the event.
Collins, who has been working off of a short approach, jumped 21-4.0.25 in the long jump.
Women's Highlights: Sabrina Degnan had another outstanding day in the throwing events, coming away with a pair of lifetime bests. Her throw of 37-04 in the shot put bumps her up to 7th all-time in Oxy history and her discus of 120-10 moves her to 5th in school history.
In the sprints, Emma Yudelevitch led the way with a 12.47 in the 100m, finishing sixth overall out of 59 women competing mostly from scholarship schools. Isabelle Dunne went 1:05.66 in the 400m hurdles for a second-place finish with teammate Allison Kilday right behind her in third at 1:05.75.
