Porter Qualifies in 200m on Day 1 at NCAAs

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Lashauna Porter was the big story for the Occidental women's track and field team on Day 1 of the NCAA Championships, qualifying for the 200m finals. She ran 25.10 into a -1.9 wind, securing the eighth of nine finals spots. Jada Newkirk narrowly missed the cut, finishing 10th in prelims with a time of 25.26.

Porter will run her 200m final on Saturday at 2:50 pm local time. 

Newkirk also competed in the long jump.

Sabrina Degnan, Melissa Braun and Isabelle Dunne also competed for the Oxy women, placing higher than their national ranking in their respective events.

Degnan finished 13th in the javelin with a best of 127-0.75 after being ranked 17th, Braun placed 14th overall in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-05.75, jumping up from 22nd, and Dunne competed in the 400m hurdles, placing 16th in the country with a time of 63.58, also moving up from 22nd.

Dunne completes her decorated Oxy career as a SCIAC Champion in the 400m hurdles and the Pat Yeomans Award winner for outstanding achievement in an individual sport.

For the Oxy men, Austin DeWitz will compete in the high jump at 11 a.m. on Friday and Zach Greenleaf will compete in the pole vault at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
