LOS ANGELES — Claire Strohm led the way with 10 kills, first year Lara Minassians changed the momentum with some excellent play in her first career match and the Occidental women's volleyball team started 2017 out on the right foot with a 3-1 over St. Katherine at Rush Gymnasium on Friday.
The Tigers are back in action with a busy Saturday at the Pacific Coast Classic. Oxy begins with MCLA at Pomona-Pitzer at 9 a.m. and then plays Bethel at 11:15 a.m.
Strohm, Oxy's senior star and a two-time All-SCIAC selection, was her usual steady self, hitting .207. Hannah Wagner chipped in nine kills on .240 hitting with a team-high nine digs, Amanda Herold had six kills, and Cassandra Guidice and Taylor Gorretta each had five kills.
Minassians, a 6-foot setter out of Glendale and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, dished out 14 assists and had three aces and eight digs. After sitting out the first set, her outstanding play allowed everyone else to settle in.
"After a slow start we had a huge momentum change with Lara coming into the game and dominating with her blocks, sets, serves and digs," Oxy head coach Heather Collins said. "We also had huge key hustle plays from Emily Davis, Cassandra Guidice and Hannah Wagner that helped spark our momentum shift."
Chloe Gruwell led St. Katherine and the match with 15 kills.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
