CLAREMONT — The Occidental women's volleyball team began its 2018 season at the Pacific Coast Classic, hosted at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne this weekend. The tournament featured 16 teams, three of which are nationally ranked in the top 10.
Match 1: Union 3, Occidental 2
The Tigers would open the classic at the Rains Center in Pomona against Union College. After taking the first set 25-19, Occidental would drop the two following sets (25-19, 25-18). Going into the fourth set, with the match on the line, the Tigers won the set 25-19 bringing the match to a tie-breaking fifth set. Occidental lost the match when they dropped the fifth set 15-7, losing the match 3 sets to 2.
Taylor Gorretta led the Tigers with 13 kills on a .211 kill percentage, she was followed by Sabrina Degnan who had 11 kills. Allie Sundara had a match-high 38 assists. Lara Atalay led Union with 18 kills.
Match 2: Southwestern (Tex.) 3, Occidental 0
In their second game of the day, the Tigers traveled down the way to Claremont to take on No. 9 Southwestern (Tex). Southwestern came into the night cap losing their earlier match to fellow SCIAC school La Verne. The Pirates defeated the Tigers in straight sets and move to 1-1 on the year.
Occidental lost the first two sets by the score of 25-17 and lost the third set 26-24. Oxy had a chance to take the third set, but attacking errors led to the Pirates winning the set. Sabrina Degnan had nine kills with a kill percentage of .214. Allie Sundara had a match-high 23 assists.
Occidental wraps up at the Pacific Coast Classic tomorrow with games against Johnson & Wales at 9:30 a.m. and Franklin & Marshall at 2:15 p.m., both game will take place at La Verne.
Match 3: Johnson & Wales 3, Occidental 0
The Tigers fell to Johnson & Wales in their opening contest on Saturday morning. In what started as a close first set, the Tigers were within three after a kill from Jacqueline Rutherfurd to make the score 14-11, but the Wildcats would go on an 8-2 run to pull away from the Tigers in the first set.
Occidental fell behind early in the second second, trailing 21-13. Oxy went on a 6-0 run, cutting the lead to 21-19 before Johnson & Wales scored the final four points to take the set.
The third set went back with no team leading by more than three until the end of the set. Occidental owned the lead 21-19 before the Warriors went on a 4-1 run to end the set and win the match.
Match 4: Occidental 3, Franklin & Marshall 0
In their second match of the day, the Tigers got their first win of the 2018 season, beating Franklin & Marshall in straight sets.
Finding themselves down 8-5 early in the first set, the Tigers put together a 12-1 run, pulling away from Diplomats.
The second set was much closer and featured ten ties. Similar to the first set, the Tigers scrapped together an 11-2 run to win the second set 25-20.
In the final set of the match Occidental jumped out to a 9-3 lead and didn't look back, winning 25-20.
Over the course of the Pacific Coast Classic, Allie Sundara led the team in assists with 119. Sabrina also had a great tournament, over the four matches with 39 kills and four service aces.
