Nevins, Degnan Lead Tigers Over Beavers

PASADENA — The Occidental women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 road win at Caltech on Tuesday night.

Sabrina Degnan had 16 kills and 22 digs on the night, and Theresa Nevins finished the match with 12 kills. Allie Sundara had 25 assist with three kills and Lara Minassians had 22 assist with one kill.

The Tigers were down as many as four points in the first set. In the first 26 points of the match, the two teams could barely get a lead greater than two. Tied at 13, Caltech would go on a 4-0 run giving them their biggest lead of the set at 17-13. The Tigers were forced to work their way back out of this deficit, and managed to tie the game at 21 after a kill by Sabrina Degnan. In what was a neck and neck first set, the Tigers would win the set 27-25 and would not have a lead greater than two. Degnan and Madelene Sellergren both had four kills in the first set.

The Tigers would jump out to a 4-2 lead in the second set. The Beavers would then manage to tie the game at five. After tying the game, Occidental went on a 14-5 run giving them a demanding 19-10 lead. With help from the Tiger attackers, Cal Tech would 11-2 run to tie the game at 21. After some back and forth volleyball, the Beavers had set point at 24-23 but the Tigers would finish the set on a 3-0 run thanks to two kills by Degnan. Tigers took the second set 26-24. The second set was led by Theresa Nevins who had five kills in the set.

The third set, similar to the first two was close. The Tigers were down 24-20 and managed to tie the game at 24 but couldn't close out set 3. There were four ties in the set.

The fourth set was all Occidental. They came out very hot and started the set on a 10-5 run. Occidental would finish the game on an 11-4 run.

The Tigers move to 5-10, 2-6 in the SCIAC, the Beavers fall to 2-13, 0-8 in the SCIAC. The Tigers return to action this Friday night to take on Manchester at home. First serve will be served at 6:00 PM in the Rush Gymnasium.
