LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 29, 2007) –
The Tigers added to their win total with a 21-14 victory over the
University of La Verne today at Taylor Pool in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The first half was a close ballgame as the
Tigers held a slight 10-9 advantage. In the second half Occidental
continued to score, adding five goals to their total in the third
and six in the fourth. The Oxy defense was able to control the
Leopards, allowing five goals over the final two frames. That
combined with the offense provided throughout the game gave the
Tigers the win.
Oxy spread the scoring around as nine
different Tigers scored. Junior captain Cameron
Brahmst led all players with six goals. Andrew
Valdes was right beind with four.
Sean Inoue (3), Jake Santelli
(2) and John Wensman (2) each scored multiple
goals while Bryce Rawers, Josh
Kantor, Austen Oliver and Gabe
Shapiro rounded out the offense.
In front of the cage, both Blair
Bergsteinsson and Max Kelly saw action,
combining for 15 saves.
Valdes is currently ranked 12th in the nation
in scoring as he averages 2.7 goals per game. Brahmst also made it
into the top 20 with 2.4 goals per game. Occidental as a team has
scored 249 goals this season, which places them 8th among teams in
all divisions. Defensively, Kelly and Bergsteinsson each average
9.8 blocks per game and are ranked 24 and 28 respectively.
Oxy improves to 12-10 overall, 3-2 in SCIAC
play and now sits tied in third place with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Occidental has a pair of conference games remaining before the
SCIAC Tournament.
Wednesday is the final home game of the 2007
season. Occidental will host Pomona-Pitzer at 4:00 p.m.
