THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Jan. 26, 2008) –
Cal Lutheran scored the first bucket of the game, but Occidental
jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the opening minutes of play, never
trailing again as they handed CLU a 72-61 loss at the Gilbert Arena
tonight in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
action tonight.
The senior-junior duo of Stacie
Roshon and Brianne Brown combined for 24
points and 24 rebounds as each recorded a double-double for the
Tigers. Also adding double figure performances were Laura
Mohler and Stephanie Babij
Occidental opened a 22 point lead, the largest
on the night, with 17:39 to play in the second half. The Regals
chipped away and pulled within eight points, twice, but a pair of
Babij free throws at the 2:44 mark put the game into a
double-figure spread that the Tigers would maintain throughout the
remainder of regulation. Oxy players combined for go 9-14 from the
free throw line during that time.
Brown and Mohler tied with a game-high 19
points, while Roshon and Babij poured in 14 apiece. Brown and Babij
were 7-for-8 and 6-for-7, respectively, from the charity stripe in
the game.
Overall the Tigers shot 35.7% from the field
and were 40% from long range with a 72.2 free throw shooting
percentage on the night. Cal Lutheran combined to shoot 41.3 % from
the field, but were just 50% from the line.
Oxy grabbed 47 rebounds while the Regals
combined for 36. Fifteen of the 47 boards came on the offensive end
of the court for Oxy, including four from both Roshon and Brown.
Occidental converted offensive boards for 14 points and Cal
Lutheran gained eight points on second changes.
The Regals scored 30 of their 61 points in the
paint as the Tigers put in 22 from the paint. Occidental forced 23
turnovers, leading to 20 Oxy points. Cal Lutheran used 21 Tiger
turnovers to their advantage, scoring 13 points.
Britinee Yasukochi led all
players with four assists, while Mohler added three. Brown was tops
on the court with four steals and Mohler, Roshon and
Jennifer Wilhelm each stole the ball twice.
CLU's Mary Placido and Ali Neill each
scored 11 and Neill had a team leading six rebounds in the game.
Occidental returns to Rush Gymnasium on
Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008 when they host the Whittier College Poets
at 7:30 p.m.
