ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 18, 2008) – In a
game that saw little offense on both sides of the pool, the
Occidental College Tigers fell 5-3 at the hands of the
Pomona-Pitzer Saghens on the opening day of SCIAC competition.
While neither team scored in the opening
quarter, the Sagehens notched three goals, holding the Tigers
scoreless in the second quarter to leave Oxy with a 3-0 deficit at
the break.
Oxy got on the board early in the third
quarter when senior Andrew Valdes netted his
62nd goal of the season. Freshman Brendan
Whitemore further cu the PP lead with the first SCIAC goal
of his career with 2:37 to play in the third quarter at Haldeman
Pool.
The Sagehens added to their lead a minute
later, taking a 4-2 advantage into the final stanza of play.
Teams exchanged goals, with senior
Cameron Brahmst scoring the final Oxy goal of the
game, leaving the Tigers with their first conference loss of the
season.
Defensively Valdes and Jake
Santelli each had three steals with Brahmst and
Tai McDermott adding two apiece.
In front of the cage Max
Kelly made 12 blocks.
The Tigers will be back in the pool on
Wednesday when they travel to the Samuelson Aquatics Center on the
campus of Cal Lutheran for a 5:00 p.m. opening sprint.
