CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2004) –
Occidental College settled for a split on day one of the Claremont
Convergence Tournament taking game one by a huge 17-4 margin before
falling 13-8 in game two.
The Tigers opened up tournament play with a
dominating win over Penn State Behrend behind a four goal
performance from senior Andrew Valdes. Freshman
Brendan Whittemore scored a hat trick.
Goalie Blair Bergsteinsson
was dually effective with a team high four assists and 10 saves.
Defensively, Occidental earned 27 steals with
four coming from senior Cameron Brahmst, who was
honored by the Western Water Polo Association for his performance
at the UC Santa Cruz Tournament last weekend. Adding to the defense
was Austen Oliver who tallied a pair of drawn
ejections and a pair of steals, adding to the offense as well with
a goal.
In game two, the Tigers fell short to
John's Hopkins with just four Tiger players combining for
eight goals. Brahmst was tops on the squad with three with Valdes
and Oliver adding two apiece and Josh Kantor
rounding out the offense.
Max Kelly got the start in
front of the cage and made nine saves, adding two steals. Valdes
led the defense with three steals as classmate, Brahmst, recorded
the only Tigers field block of the day.
The Tigers are now 4-9 overall this season and
will conclude the Convergence Tournament tomorrow with games
against George Washington and Washington &
Jefferson.
