LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2008) – Oxy
controlled the tempo of the game, despite being up by only two at
half time en route to a 57-48 victory over the
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action tonight in Rush
Gymnasium.
The Tigers opened up with a 13-6 run, but CMS
battled back, getting within a point at both the 8:01 and 1:01
marks. Gillian Nugent hit one of her three
three-point shots with 50 seconds to play in the first half, giving
the Tigers a 27-25 advantage at the mid-way mark.
Things remained close for the first part of
the second half, with the gap ranging from four and seven points.
Nugent hit another of her long shots with 8:01 to go in regulation,
giving the Tigers a double-figure lead at 50-40. Occidental
maintained the edge throughout, never trailing in the contest.
Brianne Brown turned in
another solid performance with her fourth consecutive
double-double, marking her sixth of the season, as she scored 10
and grabbed 10 rebounds. Freshman Stephanie Babij
also scored 10 points and was close to a double-double of her own
with eight boards.
Sharing lead in scoring was Oxy's
Stacie Roshon and CMS's Camille Sheffield
who each finished with 15. Although Roshon shot just 2-for-8 from
three point range she used a solid 9-for-9 performance at the
charity stripe to her advantage.
Although the Athenas out-rebounded the Tigers
34-31, Oxy had the edge on the offensive end of the court by an
11-6 margin. Defensively Babij tallied a pair of blocks for Oxy as
well.
Overall the Tigers forced 15 turnovers,
stealing the ball 11 times with Brown and Laura
Mohler recording four apiece. Mohler also led the Tigers
with five assists and Roshon supplied four.
Occidental improves to 15-5 overall, an
identical mark to that of SCIAC co-leaders La Verne and Redlands.
Oxy sits at 7-2 in SCIAC play while ULV and UR each have 8-1 marks.
The Tigers will travel to Pasadena, Calif.
where they will take on the Beavers at 5:00 p.m. prior to a 7:30
