LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2009) – The Tigers tore past
the Beavers of Caltech tonight as all 14 players who were dressed
scored and the Occidental freshmen combined for 45 points as the
team was six points shy of the century mark, inking a 94-40
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory
tonight at Rush Gymnasium.
Occidental opened up a 25-3 lead with the last three of those
points coming from Blake Moore on his first
collegiate shot, and he followed with another pair of
three-pointers, to post nine points in just seven minutes of action
during the first half. Going into the locker room Oxy held a 47-21
advantage.
On an 8-for-11 shooting night, including 2-for-3 from beyond the
arc, Jack Hanley led all players with 19 points
after starting the game off by shooting 4-for-5 for 10 first half
points adding five assists overall.
Occidental shot an outstanding 63.3% from the field in the
opening half and followed up with a 61.8 shooting percentage in the
second half, combining to go 40-for-64 from the field. Overall the
Tigers were 8-for-14 from three-point range on the night. The black
and orange scored 52 points in the paint.
The only other Tiger to reach double figures was Sean
Anderson who poured in 12. Clark Gordon
finished with nine on 4-for-5 shooting and David
Ostrow and Sam Kesten each finished with
eight. Ostrow also notched a game-high four steals. Justin
Goltz and Peter Gierlach each recorded
six assists to lead all players. Jordan Washington
and Jake Copithorne each had three assists, adding
five and four points, respectively with Copithorne adding a pair of
steals.
Oxy grabbed 35 rebounds to the Beavers' 19 and Goltz
almost single-handedly outrebounded Caltech with 14 boards, five
offensive. The Tigers used 12 offensive rebounds to score 22 second
chance points. Gordon and Anderson each had four rebounds.
Defensively the Tigers forced 23 turnovers, which led to 36
points, while only committing seven turnovers themselves. Oxy also
held Caltech to a 12-for-44 shooting night (27.3%).
The Beavers' leading scorer was Ryan Elmquist with 16 as
he recoded a pair of blocks while Han Bin Man scored nine.
Occidental travels to La Verne on Wednesday
night as they look to push their win streak to four. The Leopards
enter the night 5-11 overall after falling to
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tonight and the Tigers are now 7-9 as the
teams hold 1-4 and 3-2 SCIAC records, respectively. Tip-off is
slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Franz Athletic Court.
