LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2009) – There was no
question tonight who would come out on top. Occidental opened up
the game on a 21-2 run and cruised to an 81-37 victory over Caltech
behind a 19 point performance on 9-for-10 shooting by junior
Dior Williams to push their overall record to
13-4.
Williams was responsible for nine points in the first five
minutes of action as she layed in back-to-back buckets off steals
on break-aways, adding a third after Brianne Brown
scored two of her 12 points on a fast break jumper.
Stephanie Babij and Zoe Walsh
also reached double figures with 10 points apiece.
Occidental forced 33 turnovers, which led to 41 points and
scored 46 of their 81 points in the paint. Madeline
Rose stole the ball four times and Britinee
Yasukochi, who had three steals, supplied a game-high
seven assists. Williams also finished with four assists and three
steals in just 14 minutes of action.
Overall the Tigers shot 52.6% from the field in the first half
and followed up with a 45.2 shooting percentage in the second half
going 34-for-69 overall.
The Beavers, who shot 31% from the field were led by Lisha Li
and Krissy Dahl, who each scored 10 points.
Tonight the rebounding edge went to Occidental (34-25) who
grabbed 12 offensive boards, which led to 13 second chance points.
Thursday evening Occidental will travel to La
Verne. The Leopards enter the night x-x overall and the Tigers are
now 13-4 as both teams boast 4-1 SCIAC records as the cats battle
for sole possession of first place.
