LA VERNE, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2009) – Three free-throws down
the stretch with under a minute to play in regulation from the
hands of junior Sean Anderson were the difference
in tonight's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference match-up between the Tigers from Occidental College and
the Leopards of the University of La Verne as Oxy returned home
with a 53-50 victory.
Anderson, who scored 17 first-half points, finished with his
second double-double in three games with 28 points and 14 rebounds,
adding four blocks. He was the only Tiger to step up to the
free-throw line, where he was 8-for-14 on the evening including
those three that broke a 50-50 tie with 1:13 to play. Thirty
seconds prior to the final buzzer he sank one of two shots, which
was the ultimate winning point as ULV was unable to score on
back-to-back attempts with 20 seconds to play.
Occidental (8-9, 4-2 SCIAC) shot 50% from the field in the opening
half while holding the Leopards (5-12, 1-5) to a 9-for-30 (30%)
shooting effort. While Anderson was the only player in double
figures for the Tigers, Jack Hanley chipped in
with nine and Blake Moore had eight. David
Ostrow had a game-high seven assists.
No ULV player scored more than eight points apiece, but 10
different Leos recorded a point.
The Tigers also held a slight rebounding edge with 37 to
ULV's 32, although the Leopards grabbed 13 offensive boards
to Oxy's 11. Hanley and Justin Goltz each
pulled down six rebounds, three of Goltz's on the offensive
end.
On Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. the Tigers will host the University
of Redlands Bulldogs (6-11, 2-4 SCIAC) in their final first-round
SCIAC game of the season following the women's game at 5:00
p.m.
