LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 24, 2009) – After a lopsided
first half in which the Sagehems outscored the Tigers 12-5 in
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action,
Occidental College came back to pull the game close in the final
two quarters of play, falling in the end 15-13.
At Taylor Pool to kick off homecoming weekend, the Tigers used a
second half surge to pull within a pair of goals, led by
Greg Benz who found the back of the net four times
while Austen Oliver and Brendan
Whitmore scored three apiece.
In the opening quarter PP powered past the Tigers, who managed
just one goal, while allowing six. In the second period, Oxy woke
up and tallied four, but still allowed six.
After the intermission the Tigers outscored the Sagehens 8-3,
but the come-back effort fell short.
Benz added three drawn ejections to his four goals while Oliver
finished with three assists as well as his three goals.
In front of the cage, Max Kelly stopped 12
shots. Oxy stole the ball just three times as a team today.
The Tigers will be back in the pool tomorrow for the annual
Alumni game as Homecoming weekend continues. Players will jump into
Taylor Pool at noon. Oxy will then be back into competitive water
polo on Wednesday, Oct. 28 when they host the Leopards from the
University of La Verne at 4:00 p.m.
