CLAREMONT, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2009) – At the 2009 Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament the
men's water polo team came away with a 1-2 record for the
weekend after defeating the University of La Verne 13-9 despite
losses to Pomona-Pitzer (11-4) and Cal Lutheran University (14-8)
to wrap up the season.
On Friday in the first game of the weekend the No. 3
Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens defeated the Tigers who only managed to find
the back of the net four times. The scoring came from four
different sources and Tai McDermott was
responsible for two assists as well as a goal. Austen
Oliver drew three ejections to go along with a goal and an
assist.
In the Tigers' lone win of the weekend, Oliver led the
attack with four goals while Brendan Whitmore, Greg
Benz and Richard Dybas netted three goals
apiece for Oxy. Oliver dished out three assists and Joe
Reynolds tallied two, adding five steals.
During the final game of the season the Tigers again spread out
the scoring with five different players chipping in. Benz led the
pack with three followed by Whitmore with a pair. Oliver, held
scoreless, drew six ejections and recorded one asssit.
Max Kelly, appearing in the final water polo
tournament of his career, recorded a total of 44 saves during the
three-day event. He also had six steals and three assists.
Occidental finished the 2009 season with an overall record of
9-17 with a 3-7 SCIAC mark to place sixth.
