LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 12, 2009) – A tied score at the
break was erased as the Occidental College Tigers stormed back from
a poor offensive first half to literally steal the game away from
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a 60-42 victory tonight at Rush
Gymnasium.
In the end Oxy stole the ball away from CMS 14 times, with
senior Brianna Brown racking up a game-high six.
While the Tigers were stealing away the ball, they were also taking
care of it, committing just four first half turnovers of their own.
During the opening half of action Occidental led by only as much
as four points, although they forced 15 Athenas' turnovers,
picking up 11 steals as a team, six alone from Brown, who earned
SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors last week.
Although the defense was there for the Tigers during the opening
stanza, a 6-for-33 shooting half left them knotted at the break
with an Athenas' squad that managed to make 50% of their
field goals. Brown was responsible for 14 of the Tigers' 22
first half points, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
The final period of play was a different story for Oxy who
controlled the ball, scoring 14 points over the first 10 minutes,
holding CMS to four. Occidental continued to build throughout the
entire half, shooting 41.2% from the field ending with their ninth
SCIAC win of the season. Brown poured in 25 points to lead all
players and was the only Tiger to finish in double figures.
Gillian Nugent and Britinee
Yasukochi each had four assists in the game.
CMS (12-10, 5-6 SCIAC) was lead by Aria Krumwiede who had 17
points and Sarah Beattie had a team high seven boards for the
Athenas.
Occidental held a 37-28 rebounding edge, pulling down 18
offensive rebounds while the Athenas were credited with just a pair
of offensive boards. Stephanie Babij led all
players with 10 rebounds while Brown and Madeline
Rose finished with seven apiece.
Tonight both teams donned the color “pink” as part
of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association “Pink
Zone” to raise breast cancer awareness. The Tigers wore pink
shoelaces while CMS pulled on pink socks with their mascot
“Athenas” written across the sides.
Occidental improves their overall record to 17-5 and remain at
the top of the SCIAC with a 9-2 record along with La Verne who
defeated Cal Lutheran tonight.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday when they travel
to Whittier for a showdown with the Poets (15-7, 7-4) who currently
hold the fourth spot in the SCIAC. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00
p.m. preceding the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
