Tigers cruise past Beavers for SCIAC win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2010) – Eight minutes into the game the Tigers used a 17-0 run to open things up and all 14 players either scored or handed out an assist as Occidental College cruised by Caltech, 83-33, in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action tonight at Rush Gymnasium.

With the score separated by a point, Huston Conti, last week's SCIAC Athlete of the Week, sparked the 17-0 showing that spanned five minutes as he contributed seven of those points, adding a pair of steals and an assist. Eric Leider scored a bucket to put the Tigers up by 10, with 10:33 to play in the first half, a double figure lead they would not let go of for the remainder of the game.

With the Black Hole back on campus and in full force, tonight, the stands were loud as the Tigers controlled all facets of the game from scoring to defense. Oxy looked to sophomore Jack Hanley for a game-high 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting (4-for-4) from the free-throw line, in just 23 minutes as he also added two steals, two assist and a block.

Joining Hanley in double figures were Conti and Deshun McCoy who each poured in 15 while combining for 12 rebounds, each pulling down three offensive boards. Both players finished with two steals and Conti had two assists with McCoy handing out one and recording a block.

Coming off the bench tonight Jeff Irwin and Joe Greenaway scored five points apiece with three rebounds, a block and two assists, respectively. Peter Gierlach was 2-for-2 from the field for four points. Also scoring four points each were Jake Copithorne, Tim Glen and Pablo Warner. Copithorne also chipped in with five rebounds, two steals and three assists.

Defensively the Tigers forced 25 turnovers, coming away with 14 steals, which turned into 34 points. The Black and Orange were tough on the glass tonight, pulling down 45 rebounds, 20 offensive, which was two less than the Beavers came away with overall. Sean Anderson had six, also grabbing three offensive behind McCoy who led all Tigers with seven.

Oxy shot 48% from the field and held the Beavers to just 30% as Caltech was just 5-for-20 in the second half. As a team Oxy combined for 24 assists as they continue to move the ball well.

Caltech was led by Mike Edwards with 15 points. Ryan Elmquist had a game-high eight rebounds, chipping in 13 points for the Beavers tonight.

Occidental (11-4, 3-1 SCIAC) will hit the road for their next two games. Saturday at 7:30 p.m. they travel to the University of La Verne (5-10, 1-3) who is coming off a 76-61 loss to undefeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
