Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2010) – In the rubber game of the season with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, having won and lost 2-1 to the Athenas during the regular season, the Occidental College women's soccer team looked to freshman Georgia Wetmore for the two hugest goals of her collegiate career to date.
In the 10th minute, CMS took an early 1-0 lead when Lizzie Van Buskirk crossed the ball to Madison Shove who found the back of the Tigers' net.
Trailing 1-0 at the intermission, the Black and Orange came out strong in the second half. The break was just enough time for the Tigers to devise a game plan, which ended with Wetmore scoring the equalizing goal in the 53rd minute in unassisted fashion.
A very evenly matched game saw each team fire off 12 shots. CMS and Oxy fired off six and five shots on goal respectively and keepers Hannah Dunham and Robin Feldman walked away with six and five saves.
As time expired in regulation and the teams battled through a pair of overtime periods, the sun began to set. The stands and sidelines, however, were bright and energetic as a couple hundred student athletes stood around the field cheering on the Tigers.
The first five rounds of shoot outs were even as each team scored on each respective attempt. As the tension mounted in the sixth round, freshman goalie Tayler Renshaw turned away the Athenas' sixth chance giving the Tigers a chance to walk away winners.
Wetmore, who had already ignited the crowd earlier in the afternoon, sent her teammates and all the Tigers' fans in the stands and on the filed into a frenzy as Occidental earned a trip to the SCIAC Tournament Championship game for the second time in school history.
In 2008 and 2009 the Tigers advanced to the final, falling to Cal Lutheran in PK's and CMS, respectively.
This fall, the Black and Orange will host the University of Redlands, who upset the No. 1 seeded CLU Regals earlier today by a margin of 2-0.
Oxy has been victorious against the Bulldogs twice this year with a pair of 1-0 wins.
For Tigers fans young and old, current and past, there will be no better way to celebrate Homecoming than by concluding the day on Patterson Field with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff between Oxy and UR for the rights to advance to the NCAA Post Season. Teams will take the field after the 2:30 p.m. football game and an 11:00 a.m. water polo game. For those unable to make it out to see the Tigers live, a video stream will be provided.
