LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 6, 2010) – In the night-cap of
a soccer double header on the Lower Soccer Field, the women's squad
controlled nearly all 90 minutes of action, not allowing a single
Soka University shot, en route to a season opening 3-0 victory.
A scoreless first half gave way to an explosive offensive
performance in the final 45 minutes for the Tigers. Junior defender
Liz
Martin scored the ultimate winning goal in the 51st
minute in unassisted fashion.
Seven minutes later the freshman duo of Jenny Clark and
Elissa
Minamishin joined forces for the second goal of
the game, giving them, respectively, their first collegiate career
assist and goal.
An insurance goal came in the 88th minute by way of fellow
freshman Kate
Corell-Buss, who came off the bench to find the back
of the net for her inaugural collegiate goal.
Among the other rookie starters tonight were goalkeeper
Tayler
Renshaw and midfielder Kellee
Murayama. Also stepping on the field for the first
time donning the Black and Orange were Callie King-Guffey,
Georgia
Wetmore, Lauriene
Madrigal and Emily
Stromborn.
As a team Occidental fired off 39 shots, 21 of which were on
goal. Martin had eight chances while Minamishim sent seven towards
the net. The Tigers also earned nine corner kicks to the Lions'
one.
Occidental hits the road for four consecutive games, beginning
with a game on Saturday, Sept. 11 at The Master's College. Kickoff
in the non-conference match-up is slated for 11:00 a.m.
