Tigers use depth to overwhelm Sagehens

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 22, 2011) – Oxy bounced back from a tough loss on the road Thursday night to roll past the visiting Sagehens.  The Black and Orange put their depth on display as they had 12 players score on their way to an 83-28 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

The Tigers roared to a 24-4 lead to open the game behind their "22" full court press.  Even when they picked up at mid court they were still able to wreak havoc on the Pomona Pitzer half court offense, scoring 22 points off turnovers, en route to a 42-14 halftime lead.

Even with a different look in the second half, the Tigers continued to play great half court defense and put up another 41 points in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Makenzie Brandon had a great night from the field with 14 points on 7 for 9 shooting while passing out a game high four dimes.  The front court was tough on the glass as Stephanie Babij and Katelyn Rowe combined for 13 points and 18 rebounds.  Laura Mohler added nine points and three assists.

The depth of the Tigers was the main reason Oxy put together their largest margin of victory of the season and best defensive effort.  The defense forced 26 turnovers and held the Sagehens to just 17.5% shooting from the field. Gabriela Hirsh-Gonsalez, on the other hand, was instant offense for the Black and Orange, scoring a game high 16 points in just nine minutes of action off the bench, shooting 70% from the field to go along with two steals.  She led a push by the bench that outscored the Sagehen reserves 45-0.  Liz Little took control of the floor, handing out three assists while setting the tempo for the Tiger attack.  Kendra Carter was the other double digit scorer off the bench with 11 points and eight boards.  Annika Awbrey scored five points while Kristen Treat had the most cheered basket of the game, scoring the final bucket on a sweet up and under move, the bench and crowd were on their feet by the time the ball swished through the net.

Pomona (3-13, 1-4) was led by Christina Sheckler and her team high 10 points.

Oxy (9-7, 4-1), who have won five of their last six, will be back in action on Thursday, January 27th, for a home tilt with Caltech.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
