Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2011) – Tonight in Ducey Gymnasium on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps two streaking teams met head to head in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener. The host Athenas entered the night riding a nine game winning streak while the Tigers came in as the three time defending SCIAC champions. As always nothing came easy tonight, as the last three contests between these two teams have gone down to the wire. Nevertheless it was the Tigers who once again came out victorious by a final score of 60-57.
The Tigers used a balanced attack to edge CMS tonight with four tigers scoring in double digits. Laura Mohler started her final run through SCIAC play with a team high 15 points while playing all 40 minutes of the contest. Stephanie Scamman was equally impressive, putting together her second perfect offensive night of the season, as she finished with 13 points while making all three of her triple attempts, finishing 5-for-5 from the field.
Also helping to stretch the defense by scoring 10 apiece were Michelle Lo and Katelyn Rowe. Rowe also finished with seven rebounds, second only to the team high eight pulled down by Stephanie Babij.
Oxy needed that collective team effort to overcome the extraordinary individual effort by the Athenas 5-foot-11 sophomore Frannie Hemmerlgarn, who finished with game highs of 23 points and 16 rebounds.
Even with that great individual performance and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (10-2, 0-1 SCIAC) dominance on the glass (CMS 45 – Oxy 28) they came up short in a rematch of last season's SCIAC post season tournament semifinals.
Oxy (6-6, 1-0) returns to Rush Gymnasium on Thursday, January 13th as they host the University of La Verne, with tip off scheduled for 7:30pm.
