Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Up 30-22 at intermission, the Tigers went on a 17-5 run to open the second half, surging past the visiting Poets by a final score of 76-41 in tonight's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match up on Breast Cancer Awareness night.
The Poets trailed early but fought back to cut the lead to two at 19-17 with just eight minutes left in the first half. But Laura Mohler (two jumpers) and Stephanie Scamman (one layup and a three point play from the elbow) fueled a nine nothing run to end the last threat of the game as Oxy forged ahead 28-17, a double digit lead they would continue to maintain for rest of the contest.
The Tigers poured it on in the second half, outscoring Whittier 46-19, as Oxy held the Poets to just 27.3% shooting from the field this evening. The defending SCIAC champions excelled on both ends of the floor as they forced 17 turnovers while 10 players notched at least one point as all 15 Tigers saw action with the lead hovering in the twenties for most of the final twenty minutes.
The Poets (12-11, 6-6) were led by Kourtney Zilbert, who scored a team high 13 points while pulling down eight boards, but that wasn't enough as Whittier fell to sixth place in the conference standings with the loss and will need help to qualify for the conference tournament.
Oxy (15-8, 10-2) rolled on offense behind four double digit efforts led by reigning SCIAC player of the year Stephanie Babij who had a game high 16 points, five assists and nine rebounds. Mohler dropped 14 points on the night to go along with four assists and two steals. Katelyn Rowe scored 12 points while Scamman added 11 points to go with two steals.
The Tigers will welcome Cal Lutheran University (13-10, 7-5 – tied for 3rd) to Rush Gymnasium on Saturday, February 19th, with tip off scheduled for 5pm.
