Occidental Wins SCIAC Regular Season Championship

PASADENA, Calif. – The Occidental College Tigers (17-8, 12-2 SCIAC) clinched the 2010-11 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Basketball Regular Season Championship tonight with their 82-35 win over Caltech. The Tigers will be the top seed in this weekend's SCIAC Women's Basketball Postseason Tournament and will serve as host for all games that they play.

The Black and Orange clinched their fourth consecutive regular season SCIAC championship with a decisive 47 point victory in Pasadena tonight.  Oxy opened up a 46-14 lead at the break behind 15 first half points from Michelle Lo.  As a team they shot 60% from the field while surrendering just six first half baskets.

Oxy balanced the playing time tonight, with no player playing more than 18 minutes and 12 athletes logging double digit minutes.

Laura Mohler added 12 points while Liz Little scored nine points and handed out a game high four assists.  Kendra Carter pulled down a team high four rebounds, sharing the honor with Mohler and Drew Van Vleck, who both grabbed four boards. 

It was the fourth time this season the Tigers scored at least 80 points, sending the Beavers (0-24, 0-14) to a winless season, while the Black and Orange look ahead to bigger goals.

Occidental will face the fourth seeded University of La Verne Leopards (12-13, 9-5 SCIAC) in the SCIAC semifinals on Friday night on the Occidental campus in Los Angeles. The Leopards needed overtime tonight to defeat Redlands and earn the final spot in the tournament.

The University of the Redlands Bulldogs (16-9, 10-4 SCIAC) earned the second seed in this weekend's tournament and will host the third seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas (19-6, 9-5 SCIAC). This semifinal will take place on the Redlands campus in Redlands, CA on Friday night.

The SCIAC Championship Game will take place on the campus of the highest remaining seed on Saturday with an NCAA Division III Tournament Automatic Berth at Stake.
