LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Elissa Minamishin scored a pair of goals in the second half for the Occidental College women's soccer team, but it was too little, too late as the Tigers lost to Chapman University 3-2 at home on Wednesday.
The sophomore forward found the back of the net in transition on a through ball from Taryn Ng in the 54th minute and again on a cross from Whitney Roline in the 83rd minute.
The Tigers (0-3) outplayed the Panthers 2-1 in the second half, but a goal kick that turned into a break for Chapman (2-2-1) ended with Kate Lilly beating goalkeeper Lauren Johnson for the game-winner in the 64th minute.
"I thought we showed some resolve, coming out with a sense of urgency in the second half despite being down two goals," Occidental College coach Colm McFeely said. "If we had that same type of effort, intensity and concentration in the first half, we would have been better off."
Aimee Evans scored from the six-yard-line less than two minutes into the game on a corner kick and Val Sobol buried a right-footed shot on a loose ball in the box in the 23rd minute to give Chapman the two-goal halftime cushion.
Led by Minamishin, Oxy's second half effort made for more competitive soccer and leaves the Tigers with a better feeling heading into their first league game on Saturday against Claremont-M-S.
"I was really impressed with our ability to win balls in the air especially in the second half. We need to do that from the get-go," senior defender Maddy Rasch said, adding that she was impressed with the team's second half. "I see a pattern of not letting down and that's not easy to do."
Alex Nicholson created a handful of opportunities for herself and the Tigers for the second straight game, placing two of her four shots on goal.
"I had a lot of shots on goal. It's frustrating I couldn't place them a little better," said the junior forward. "Preseason is a learning experience and it hasn't been fun to lose, but I feel like every game has been a big step forward."
