LOS ANGELES – A three-goal effort from senior Joe Reynolds (Souderton, Penn.) wasn't enough to hold off a strong offensive outburst from Pomona-Pitzer as the Occidental College men's water polo team fell 19-6 on Saturday.
Pomona-Pitzer (6-12, 3-0 SCIAC) took an early 1-0 lead and the teams settled into a back-and-forth defensive battle for the next five minutes of the opening quarter. The Sagehens then capitalized on three consecutive Oxy turnovers in the final two minutes of the first to take a 4-0 lead.
Reynolds finally got the Tigers (5-15, 0-3 SCIAC) on the board with an outside shot with three minutes to play in the first half, but only after Pomona-Pitzer netted four more unanswered goals.
The two teams traded three goals each early in the third quarter, with Samuel Akiyama (Watsonville), Jack Stabenfeldt (Larkspur), and Reynolds each scoring for the Tigers. Once again Pomona-Pitzer scored the final goal of the quarter and took a 15-4 lead into the final eight minutes.
Reynolds finished off his hat-trick on a power play goal at the 4:00 minute mark of the fourth and Stabenfeldt added another score a minute later, but that was all Oxy could muster in the loss.
Oxy will return to action with a non-conference match next Wednesday at Cerritos College at 7 p.m.
