LOS ANGELES — The Occidental College men's water polo team gave up nine goals during a bumpy stretch to open the game and couldn't recover in a 20-7 loss to Chapman at Taylor Pool on Wednesday.
Oxy managed just three shots in the first quarter while the Panthers converted the Tigers missed opportunities into breakaway goals.
After allowing two early goals, Oxy sophomore Jack Sinclair (Alhambra) got the Tigers on the board when he converted a penalty shot at the 5-minute mark to make the score 9-1. The Tigers held the Panthers scoreless the rest of the half.
Chapman opened the third with three more goals before Sam Akiyama (Aptos) scored the first of his two goals in the game to make it 12-2.
Joe Reynolds (Souderton, PA) and Jack Stabenfeldt (Larkspur) then scored consecutive goals to cut the Panther lead to eight with 2 minutes left in the third. Chapman responded though with two late, breakaway goals to go back up by 10 heading into the final quarter.
Oxy freshman Patrick Maloney (Santa Ana) scored both of his goals in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
The Tigers (5-17, 0-5) return to SCIAC play with an away match against the University of La Verne on Saturday.
