Oxy Men's Water Polo Can't Overcome Slow Start

ORANGE — The Occidental men's water polo team fell behind 5-1 in the first quarter against No. 6 Chapman and couldn't recover in a 17-10 loss on Wednesday.

After Chapman scored the first goal of the second quarter the Tigers started to claw their way back into the game behind the sharp-shooting of senior Jack Stabenfeldt, who scored three of the games next four goals to cut the Panther lead to three.

Stabenfeldt finished with a game and season high five scores.

Down three at the half and with momentum on their side, Oxy seemed to be ready for a strong comeback but costly turnovers prevented the Tigers from converting some easy opportunities.

"We were putting ourselves in the right place at the right time but more often than not, it was our own fundamental mistake that would cost us," said head coach Larry Zubrin.

Oxy out drew the panthers in exclusions 13-5, but could score only six power-play goals.

Senior Kevin Coleman established a new team record with six exclusions drawn in the game.

The attacker added two goals and an assist.  While freshman Paul Bergevin's two goals gave him his first multi-goal game as a Tiger.

Oxy returns to action with a home game next Saturday at 11 a.m. against No. 9 University of La Verne.
