LOS ANGELES — With the game destined for a 1-1 tie, Occidental freshman forward Julie Khil scored a goal with 1:19 left in double overtime to give the women's soccer team a thrilling 2-1 win over Pacific Lutheran in its home opener at Lower Field on Saturday.
Khil collected a pass from fellow freshman Kylie Takafuji at the top of the box and sailed Oxy's 24th shot over the head of PLU goalie Marissa Gonzalez for her second goal of the season.
The Tigers took the lead midway through the first half when Stephanie Welty headed in a corner kick from McCaully Patch.
Pacific Lutheran got back into the game in the second when Blake Warner buried a shot from the top of the box into the upper left corner with 32:45 remaining.
While Occidental had numerous chances to win the game during the duration of the second half and the first overtime, it wasn't until the end of the second overtime when they finally got their breakthrough.
Occidental (1-1-1) outshot Pacific Lutheran (1-2) 24-5.
The Tigers return to action on Sept. 18 when they host Whittier at 7 p.m. at Patterson Field.
