Box Score THOUSAND OAKS — Bryan Scott and Samuel Stekol put on a clinic in the air, hooking up for three touchdowns and crucial completions.
But the Occidental College football team had trouble stopping Cal Lutheran on the other side of the ball in a shootout, falling to the Kingsmen 49-39 at William Rolland Stadium on Saturday.
Scott hit seven different receivers for 316 yards and four touchdowns. His only big mistake was a late interception in the fourth quarter with his team already trailing by 10 points.
Stekol, who played limited downs due to a lingering ankle injury, made the most of his reps, catching three of Scott's touchdown throws in the first half, while totaling 76 yards on five catches on the game. His best play though was an impressive adjustment on an underthrown ball for a 32-yard reception on 4th and 7 in the fourth quarter, keeping a scoring drive alive. The catch led to a Kwame Do touchdown run and Samuel Crizer 2-point conversion on a quarterback sneak, cutting the lead to 42-39.
The Kingsmen scored on their next drive, making it a two-possession game.
Do ran for 140 yards on 19 carries for the Tigers.
The player of the night was Cal Lutheran quarterback Nick Isham, who matched Cal Lu's school record with six touchdown passes and threw for 416 yards.
Isham's top three targets all totaled more than 100 yards receiving. Sean Bellotti led with 132, Connor Allen had 128 and Andrew Worthley finished with 117.
CLU running back Ricky Johnson ran for 167 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries.
Turning Point: Trailing 35-31 in the third quarter, the Tigers marched down the field and had 1st and Goal from the 7-yard line on a 35-yard completion from Scott to Kaleb Mitchell. But on 3rd and 4th down Scott tried to hit Stekol at the near pylon with back-shoulder throws that were broken up each time by Lucas Quinn. It was the same play the two connected on twice for short touchdowns in the first half.
Cal Lutheran scored on its next drive, going up 42-31.
First Half: Oxy was the better team in the first half. Along with its offense clicking, Cordell Harris had an 80-yard kickoff return to set up an Oxy score.
Alexander Graves kicked a 40-yard field goal just before halftime, putting the Tigers up 24-21 at the break.
Defensive Standouts: Nicholas Mungia kept the Tigers in the game by blocking a field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. Marcus McDuffie and Matthew Mulvehill led Oxy with eight tackles.
Adam Goltche recovered a fumble in the first quarter.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in SCIAC play. They currently sit in third place with one game to play.
Next Game: Oxy finishes the season at Redlands (5-3, 5-1 SCIAC) on Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.
