Box Score LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's basketball team pounded the boards and forced turnovers as it picked up its first SCIAC win of the season with a 58-47 rout of Caltech at Rush Gymnasium on Wednesday.
The Tigers out-rebounded the Beavers 48-34, with 22 of their rebounds coming at the offensive end. Kendahl Wallis-Lang led Oxy's second-chance effort with seven of her nine rebounds on offense.
Defensively, Oxy deflected passes out of its extended zone defenses, forcing the Beavers into 20 turnovers.
Tiffany Kho led Oxy with 12 points and Triana Anderson chipped in 11.
Kate Lewis, Caltech's 6-foot-1 post, led the Beavers with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
From the Coach: "I was happy with our energy and effort at the defensive end and on the glass," Oxy head coach Anahit Aladzhanyan said. "We played hard and put together a solid game against a well-coached Caltech team."
The result was never in doubt. Oxy jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead and extended its advantage to a 35-18 by halftime. Kho and and Anderson led Oxy with seven points each in the first half.
The Beavers cut Oxy's lead to 51-38 on a layup by Lewis, but Stefanie Young quickly countered with a 3-pointer at the other end that recaptured the momentum. The Beavers cut the lead to single digits in garbage time.
Oxy improves to 3-12 overall and 1-5 in SCIAC play. The Beavers fall to 0-17 and 0-8.
Next Game: Oxy returns to action on Saturday against Whittier at 2 p.m. in Rush Gym.
