Box Score LOS ANGELES — Tiffany Kho came through with pressure free throws with 1.5 seconds left in overtime, Ashton Reid scored scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half and the Occidental women's basketball team won its second SCIAC game in thrilling fashion, 69-68 over Whittier at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday.
Oxy improves to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in SCIAC play. Whittier falls to 7-8 and 3-4.
Kho, who finished with a game-high 20 points despite missing 5 minutes in the second half with an injury, gave Oxy a 67-66 lead with 30 seconds left in overtime with a 15-foot jumper and then after Whittier regained the lead, she was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 1.5 seconds remaining. The sophomore point guard stepped to the line and made her first and third attempt, putting the Tigers up one.
Whittier called a timeout, drew up the inbounds play and got a decent look from 11 feet, but it missed off of the glass.
Kho left the game in the second half with 13 minutes left. When she returned she banked in a 3-pointer and made one of her six assists to setup Kendahl Wallis-Lang on a backdoor cut, giving Oxy its first lead of the second half, 52-51 with 6:25 left in regulation.
Reid played well in the second half after a slow start, scoring three times in the final 6 minutes to tie the game or give Oxy the lead. She had a contested layup as time expired in regulation to win, but missed the runner.
Ciara Byrne scored 10 points for Oxy including a pair of buckets in overtime. Triana Anderson chipped in four points and 10 rebounds and Wallis-Lang had eight rebounds off of the bench.
Carly Buechler led the Poets with 15 points and six rebounds.
First Half: The Tigers jumped out to an early first-half lead, scoring in transition off of long rebounds. Kho, Reid, Erin Matsumoto, Mackenzie Bretz and Byrne all had quick scores, putting the Tigers up 10-4 with 14:23 left in the half.
But Whittier started to play more sound basketball and chipped away at the Tigers' lead. By the 10-minute mark the Poets had evened the game at 14 and later took a 26-21 advantage to the locker room.
Kho scored five points and had five rebounds in the first half.
Next Game: Oxy travels to first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday.
