Tigers Unable to Keep Up With Undefeated Chapman

LOS ANGELES — Chapman shot the lights out and the Occidental men's basketball team struggled to get a rebound as it fell to the Panthers 99-68 at Rush Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Oxy falls to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play. Chapman improves to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Led by the sharpshooting of All-SCIAC guard Colin Zavrsnick, the Panthers went 11 of 16 from beyond the 3-point line and shot 59 percent from the field. 

Zavrsnick, who was named the SCIAC Male Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after scoring 36 points in on win over Whittier on Jan. 3, scored 19 points in 21 minutes. James Taylor added 18 off of the bench and Taylor Hamasaki scored 13 points, had six assists and no turnovers. 

Oxy's Andrew Johnson led Oxy with 14 points and seven rebounds. Spencer Levy and Juwan Rice each added 10 points and Kory Hamane scored nine. 

The Tigers were outrebounded 45-34. Oxy is 4-1 this year when it wins the rebounding battle. 

Receiving Votes: Chapman inches closer to the D3hoops.com top 25 with another win. The Panthers have consistently been receiving votes for the national rankings and were the last team left out of the Week 5 poll that includes games through Jan. 4, with 76 votes. 

The Panthers have been winning convincingly too, with just two teams losing by less than 10 points. Whitman lost to Chapman by five points and St. Joseph's (Brkln) lost by seven in overtime. 

Next Game: The Tigers take on Saint Katherine in a non-conference home game on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Rush Gym.

Oxy returns to SCIAC play at Redlands on Jan. 13. Oxy split its season series with the Bulldogs in 2014, winning at home and losing on the road. The Bulldogs are currently 3-8 overall and 0-2 in conference.
