PASADENA — Matt Munet scored three goals and Matt Weiser added two as the Occidental men's water polo team beat Caltech 9-6 for its first SCIAC win of the season on Wednesday.
Caltech took an early one-point lead, but Oxy quickly responded with three unanswered goals. Occidental finished the half with a lot of momentum, leading 6-2.
Caltech made a push to get back in the game in the third quarter. Patrick Eck opened the quarter with two goals to bring the Beavers within two, but Occidental widened the gap to 8-4 to finish the 8-minute segment.
Caltech scored two in a row in the fourth before Occidental sealed the game with a shot from the other end of the pool to make it 9-6.
Oxy Goalkeeper Josh Needleman had eight saves in the first half and Adam Florsheim had eight saves in the second half.
Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 3-17 and 1-6 in SCIAC play with one game remaining before the SCIAC Championship Tournament.
Caltech falls to 7-16 and 0-7.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in the pool against Redlands on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at Taylor Pool. Caltech finishes the season with a home game against Chapman on Nov. 14.
