Sagehens Hold Off Tigers

CLAREMONTCiara Byrne scored 12 points and Erin Matsumoto chipped in 11, along with six rebounds and four steals, but the Occidental women's basketball team was edged at Pomona-Pitzer, 48-44 on Saturday.

Triana Anderson added eight points off of the bench for Oxy.

The Tigers struggled from the field, shooting just 27 percent for the game. 

Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 6-11 overall and 2-6 with one round of the 16-game SCIAC schedule in the books.

The Sagehens improve to 7-9 and 4-3.

Pomona-Pitzer was led by Alaina Woo and Basha Brulee-Wills, who both scored nine points.

The Sagehens outscored Oxy 15-6 in the second quarter and then opened the third quarter with a 6-2 run to extend a 10-point lead.

In the fourth quarter, Matsumoto hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 37 and then after teammate Midori McElwee added a 3-pointer of her own, she hit another jumper to put the Tigers up 42-37 with 4:52 to play. From that point on though, the Tigers went 0 for 8 to finish the game as Pomona-Pitzer slowly recaptured the lead.

The Tigers are back in action against La Verne on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Rush Gymnasium.
