Box Score LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's soccer team was the better team on Saturday, but the result won't show it.
Oxy had chance after chance throughout the game and dominated possession in a scoreless tie with Whittier at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers outshot the Poets 19-11. They were just missing the finish.
Khil led the way with six shots, two of them on goal, and a handful that missed just wide on good looks. Kylie Takafuji, Paige Wolny, Katherine Kim and Alana Hillman all had two shots.
Season Impact: The Tigers earn one point in a spot where they would have preferred three. Oxy's record goes to 7-6-2 and 4-6-2 in SCIAC play. With two matches left to play, Oxy sits in fifth, two points back of the fourth-and-final SCIAC playoff spot, pending the rest of Saturday's SCIAC women's soccer results.
First Half: The Tigers appeared to have the game's first goal in the 23rd minute. Wolny finished off a corner near the goal, but the assistant referee ruled that Kim's ball had gone over the end line and out of bounds for a goal kick before it made its way to the back post.
Takafuji kept the pressure on with a shot that forced a save and Grace Sponaugle, Oxy's 5-foot-10 center back, headed a corner kick just over the bar.
The Tigers kept the ball mostly on Whittier's side of the field in the first 45 minutes.
Whittier's best chance came as the first half was winding down on a free kick. Kaela Reisfelt made a run across the face of Oxy goalkeeper Dallas Gunny and headed the shot wide just before the final seconds ticked off the clock.
20 minutes in Whittier had its first glimmer of a chance. Jenna Muise sent a corner to the back post toward Leila Afrasiyabi, but she couldn't run onto the ball.
Francesco Escobedo forced Gunny into her first save of the game in the 30th minute. The Tigers turned the ball over in their defensive half and Escobedo was able to get in behind the defense for a shot, but her angle wasn't great and it was easily secured by Gunny.
Second Half: Karla Alas-Lopez nearly connected with Khil in the 65th minute on one of the game's best chances. Alas-Lopez played a ball over the top of the Poets' defense to Khil, who perfectly timed her run, had a nice first touch and just didn't get enough on the shot, sending a roller to goalkeeper Alexi Cruz, who saved the ball with her feet.
In the 71st minute, Khil had another chance at the near post on a cross from Wolny that was blocked and sent out for a corner.
In the 76th minute, Khil got behind the defense once again and received a nice rolling pass from Wolny, but missed the shot wide right.
The roles were flip flopped in the 87th minute. Khil put on an incredible dribbling display, weaving through four defenders, and laid the ball off for Wolny. Wolny took a good touch and tried to beat the keeper far post, but the space was closed by the keeper and the shot was saved.
Oxy's first good chance of the second half came on a right-footed shot from Megan Maher that was blocked inside the box in the 59th minute.
Lauren Kai had a good opportunity for the Poets in the 60th minute. She dribbled the ball up the right side of the field and hit a ball that was somewhere in between a cross and a shot, missing just over the back left corner of the net.
1st OT: Wolny got the ball from Khil and hit a slow shot that was saved. Khil was there for the rebound, hit it towards the goal, but the shot was blocked by a Whittier defender.
It was the only threatening chance by either team in the overtime segment.
2nd OT: Neither team was able to attempt a shot in the second overtime period as obvious fatigue set in. The Tigers did get one free kick without anyone on the end of it.
Senior Day: Khil, Takafuji and Wolny were honored in their last home game with a brief pregame ceremony.
Khil has been one of the more decorated women's soccer players in Oxy history, winning multiple All-SCIAC and All-Region honors and also earning SCIAC Women's Soccer Athlete of the Year honors in 2014. She will graduate with a degree in psychology.
Takafuji has been the heart of Oxy's midfield as a four-year player, starter and team captain. She quietly controls the game, offensively and defensively. She was an All-SCIAC selection in 2013 and will graduate with a degree in kinesiology.
Wolny went to Pierce College and then Idaho St. before coming to the Tigers. She's played in all but one of Oxy's games this season and will graduate with a degree in cognitive science.
Next Game: Oxy plays at Cal Lutheran on Oct. 26 and then finishes the regular season at Redlands on Oct. 29.
