LOS ANGELES – Occidental picked up its first SCIAC win with an 11-7 win over Chapman at Taylor Pool on Wednesday.
Paul Bergevin led the Tigers with three goals, and Dominic Rodriguez and William Kim each added two.
Oxy goalkeeper Adam Florsheim continued his outstanding play, finishing with nine saves, two steals and an assist. He even drew a roar from the crowd when he launched a goal from the far end of the pool at the beginning of the second half.
Down 3-2, Bergevin was able to tie the game up at the start of the second quarter with a goal straight down the middle of the net. Matt Munet followed up with a goal, giving Oxy the lead. The Tigers held their advantage for the rest of the game.
After losing to Chapman earlier in the season, Occidental showed much improvement in this game. The win means a lot to the team, especially to the seniors.
"I'm so proud of how disciplined we were in order to get this win," said Bergevin. "Chapman runs a pretty active offense, but everyone stayed poised and just did their jobs. Adam played great in goal and we also did an awesome job shot blocking in our 5 man. After losing to Chapman so many times in my Tiger career, this one was special."
Chapman's Jeff O'Brian and Ivo Ivanis led the Panthers with two goals each.
Season Impact: The Tigers now sit at 1-3 in SCIAC play. They play again at home against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 11 a.m. Saturday.
