Box Score LOS ANGELES — Zach Baines scored 26 points and hit four threes, Andrew Johnson scored 25 and Jay Miller played an outstanding all-around game, leading the Occidental men's basketball team to an 82-57 win over Whittier at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday.
Baines go hot from deep for three threes in the second half as the Tigers went on a big run, extending a 30-point lead with 3:03 remaining in the game.
Johnson went 10 for 19 from the field and 5 for 5 from the free throw line. The senior from Loyola HS is leading the SCIAC in scoring at 21.8 ppg and is shooting 52 percent from the field.
Miller ran the show for the Tigers on offense and set the tone defensively. He scored eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds, had two assists and a steal.
Caleb Yellin-Flaherty scored seven points and had eight rebounds off of the bench, Joe Compagno chipped in six points and three assists and Austin DeWitz scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Tigers had 17 assists to just five turnovers, and held Whittier to 35 percent shooting from the field for the game.
Nick Potthoff led Whittier with 18 points and five rebounds and Anthony Martinez added nine points.
Season Impact: The Tigers start the second round of SCIAC with a win, improving to 10-8 overall and 2-7 in SCIAC play.
