Tigers Open Season at Whittier Tourney

CLAREMONT — Brett Luch had a big weekend, scoring eight goals in Oxy's season-opening tournament at Whittier on Saturday. The Tigers fell to Cerritos 10-7 in the first game and 11-10 to Citrus in the second game.

Oxy is back in action at the Inland Empire Classic in Redlands on Sept. 9. Oxy will face Redlands at 9 a.m. and NCAA Division I UC Santa Barbara at 1:20 p.m.

Luch, a junior transfer from UC San Diego, had three goals and a steal in Game 1 and five goals in Game 2.

Theo Bass added three goals for Oxy on the day.

The Tigers scored 15 goals out of their front-court offense, but only went 3-16 on 6-on-5 opportunities. The Tigers also struggled defensively when their opponent went a man up.

"We made great strides in one day," Oxy head coach Jack Stabenfeldt said. "Six freshmen touched the water and all of our guys saw valuable minutes. We know what we need to improve upon and our awareness will continue to grow."

The Tigers showed some resiliency in Game 2. After falling behind 9-5, they clawed their way back into the game and had the ball and a timeout play with 8 seconds left, but were unable to get a shot off.

Oxy created good opportunities on offense throughout the day and played solid defense.
