THOUSAND OAKS — The Occidental women's basketball team played well in the first half, but couldn't hang on in a 75-66 loss at Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon.
"Cal Lutheran made some big shots in the second half," Oxy head coach Anahit Aladzhanyan said. "We've got to give them credit for that."
Maylene U. Hughes was sensational for the Tigers, scoring a game-high 31 points on 11-22 shooting, 2 for 3 from beyond the three-point line and 7 of 10 from the free throw line.
Raveena Dhiman helped Oxy jump out to a 24-18 lead after the first quarter with 10 of her 13 points, going 4 for 4 and 2 for 2 from deep in the first 10 minutes.
Mallory North added six points and seven rebounds, Michaela Smith had six points and six rebounds, and Taylor Yoshida had six points, five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Natalie Ruhl led four Cal Lutheran players in double figures with 19 points, Mackenzy Iwahashi had 15 points and seven assists, Jozie Tangeman had 13 points and Cameron Mallory had 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Ruhl helped the Regals erase Oxy's halftime advantage with 12 of her points in the third quarter and then the Tigers shot just 3 for 17 from the field in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers were out-rebounded 47-39 on the game.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in SCIAC play.
CLU improves to 4-8 and 2-3.
