Los Angeles, CA – It was an exciting women's basketball match between Occidental and the University of Redlands. Oxy's speed up and down the court made up for the height difference between the Tigers and the Bulldogs. They certainly didn't let that stop them from scoring 77 points, forcing 11 turnovers, and even outscoring the Bulldogs in the final period. Although they truly put up a good fight, the Tigers came up seven points short of victory, 77-83.
It was an astounding game for all of the Oxy women. Maylene Hughes (Sacramento, CA) and Clarissa Kiyomura (Pasadena, CA) put the pressure on the Bulldogs with their immense speed. Kulaea Tulua (Seaside, CA) came off the bench with her knee brace, but she didn't let that stop her from making crucial blocks for her teammates. Toni Thompson (Newbury Park, CA) breaks her personal best this game with 40 points. Overall, each Tiger played their best. It really says something about this team when you have Amaia McCoy and the rest of the bench going crazy on the side to cheer their teammates on. The lively crowd cheering on the Tigers had a big impact on the atmosphere in the gym, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.
Redlands was able to get away with double teaming the Tigers on defense especially with their height advantage. Hannah Jerrier and Chyanne Pagkalinawan led their team with 16 points each.
Next Game: The Tigers are on the road to Claremont, CA to face the Athenas on Saturday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m.
