Los Angeles, CA – The Occidental women's basketball team played Whittier College's Poets on Wednesday night. The Tigers started off the game hot by taking an early lead against the Poets and were able to maintain that lead until the very end. Whittier tried to push through at the end of the fourth quarter, but was unable to make up the point differential. Oxy was thrilled to hold down home court during their first home game with the rest of the student body back on campus to cheer them on. The final score was 68-54, Tigers.
Paige Yasukochi and Maylene Hughes were untouchable by the Poet defense and were the two leading scorers for the Tigers. Yasukochi came through with 16 points and Hughes followed with 12. Michelle Lagunas-Monroy and Ainsley Shelsta held down the Tiger defense with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Citlalli Gurrola and Rhe Nae Leach kept their team in the game by continuously pressuring the Oxy defense and earning points for their team. Gurrole took the lead above Leach with 17 points, but Leach was not far behind with 15.
On Saturday, January 28, the Tigers will be hosting Chapman university at 2:00 p.m. at Rush Gym.
