Los Angeles, CA — Men's basketball picked up a huge conference win against the Chapman Panthers on Saturday afternoon.
Chapman jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead but Oxy was prepared to settle down and battle hard in this one. Andrew Waldman decided to take over the scoring for the Tigers as he scored Oxy's next four baskets and got the score to 15-11.
Halfway through the 1st half Anthony Hollerich would tie the game at 20 with a made three-pointer. Waldman then continued his hot first half by making two more shots and giving the Tigers a 27-22 lead
After the Panthers rallied back and cut down the Tiger lead, Bernard Cassidy made a layup that gave Oxy a 1-point lead. Sydney Shipp would hit a huge 3-pointer before the half but Oxy would enter the locker rooms trailing by a score of 35-34.
After Waldman took over for some of the 1st half it was Shipp's turn to lead the way in the 2nd half. He hit two big threes out of the half and added a layup as well to give the Tigers a 4-point lead with 15 minutes left in the game.
Waldman would then make a big layup and Kyle Dosa would hit a huge three on the next possession to put Oxy up by a score of 56-47 as Rush Gym was rocking. Chapman would not go away easily however as they made two 3-pointers to get right back in the game.
Oxy stayed composed and after a Chapman 3-pointer that tied the game, Dosa hit another huge 3-pointer to give Oxy the lead back with 5 minutes to go in the game. He would hit another jumper on the next possession and Hollerich would follow with a made layup.
Oxy would hold the lead with under a minute to go and Chapman would be forced to foul to have a chance. Hollerich was sent to the line and sank both free throws to seal the game for the Tigers. Oxy would win by a score of 73-68.
This win keeps Oxy in the mix to work their way into the top 4 teams of the conference. They will look to get another SCIAC win against Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, February 1st.
