Los Angeles, CA – The Occidental women's basketball team started off the new year strong with a victory over Cal Lutheran. Both teams had a solid first quarter with Cal Lu taking the lead by 1 point. Then the Tigers snatched the lead going into the second and third quarter, but the Regals refused to give up. The Regals won the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to take the win, ending the game 71-67, Tigers.
Paige Yasukochi dropped 20 points on the Regals, leading the Tigers once again. Maylene Hughes was just short of Yasukochi with 16 points. SCIAC athlete of the week, Michelle Lagunas-Monroy, continues to prove herself and remains a defensive force for the Tigers. Lagunas-Monroy secured 12 rebounds, taking the lead for the Tigers.
The Regals were an extremely skilled team that proved to be good competitors for the Tigers. Although they did not return to Thousand Oaks with the win, some of their players had outstanding performances. Sara Mills earned 18 points and 5 defensive rebounds for her team.
The Tigers will be traveling to Whittier, CA for their next match up against the Poets on Wednesday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m.
