Los Angeles, CA — Occidental's women's soccer team traveled to Claremont, CA to take on the CMS Athenas on Wednesday night.Â
Oxy fell behind just before the 14th minute of the game when Oxy's own Kara Ovenell's sister, Laurel, was able to score a goal for CMS. The Athenas scored again before the 18th minute to make it 2-0 early on.Â
Nearing the end of the 1st half, Maile Fukushima was able to get a shot of for the Tigers but it was saved by the CMS goalie to keep the lead at 2 goals for the Athenas. Mia Steadman was also able to put pressure on the Athena defense before the half ended with a nice shot on goal but the Athena goalie was able to make another nice save on the shot.Â
The game would go into halftime with the score at 2-0 CMS. Quickly out of the 2nd half, Clare Madden was able to put a shot on goal to test the CMS goalie once again but another nice save was made on the shot.Â
The Tigers were playing good defense to keep within 2 goals and stay within striking distance. Chloe Hetzel would get an attempt to cut the lead in half and place a nice shot on goal about halfway through the 2nd half but the CMS goalie was able to make another stop.Â
CMS would score one more time late in the 2nd half to make the lead 3-0 in their favor. Despite the Tigers putting together good looks at the goal and taking quality shots, the CMS goalie was able to keep Oxy off the board in this game and secure a 3-0 win for the Athenas.Â
Oxy remains in the hunt for a spot in the SCIAC tournament with a record of 3-3-2 in conference play. The women's soccer team will face the California Lutheran University Regals on Wednesday, October 17th at home on Patterson Field.
