Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tigers' Historic Season Ends in Amherst

Amherst, MA — The Occidental College men's soccer team's historic run came to an end in a well fought game against Amherst College Mammoths.

Oxy took three shots in the 1st half, one of which was a shot by Andrew Notter that hit the crossbar and nearly broke the tie and gave Oxy the lead late in the half. Both defenses were playing tough and Riley Nyhan was making saves for the Tigers when Amherst was able to put a shot on goal.

Nyhan had four saves in the 1st half as the game entered halftime at a score of 0-0. In the 2nd half, the Tigers nearly scored on a shot from Tyler Na-Nakornpanom just under 20 minutes into the half, but the Amherst goalkeeper was able to come up with the save.

Amherst was able to get off three more shots in the 2nd half but Nyhan was there each time to make the save and preserve the tie game. The game would reach the end of regulation and both teams had still yet to find the game's first goal.

Oxy was able to create attacks on offense in regulation that led to 9 corner kick attempts for the Tigers but Amherst found ways to narrowly evade the danger.

In the first of two 10 minute overtime periods Aiden Aley took a shot for Oxy that sailed just over the goal but neither team scored in the first overtime period. In the second overtime period the Mammoths would score the game's first goal and the game would end with Amherst winning 1-0 in a game between two of the remaining 16 best NCAA Division III schools in 2023.

The Tigers had a historic run in the 2023 season and earned many accomplishments across the entire program. Oxy men's soccer had a total of seven athletes be recognized as members of either the 1st or 2nd All-SCIAC teams.

Andrew Notter, Joey Schwartz and Evan Karp were named 1st Team All-SCIAC and Oury Diane, Riley Nyhan, Lukas Howlett, Vicente Navarro and Max Stanley were all named 2nd Team-All SCIAC.

Head Coach Rod Lafaurie and Assistant Coaches Brian Wright, Ernesto Ramirez, Fabien Segalini, Cameron Meeker and Majid Saleh were named the 2023 SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year.

Oxy senior Evan Karp also finished his great career at Oxy by being recognized as the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Year. Karp was a stronghold for Oxy on defense and helped lead them to an overall record of 15-4-3 and a 8-1-3 SCIAC record, earning them the Regular Season SCIAC Championship for the first time in program history.

The Tigers were not done there as they went on to secure two impressive victories over No. 4 Seed Cal Lutheran and the No. 2 seed Redlands Bulldogs, winning both games by scores of 3-0 to also bring home the SCIAC Tournament Championship.

Oxy then advanced all the way to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA DIII Championship tournament by winning two games in Texas against University of St. Thomas and Trinity (TX), scoring six goals total in the two games.

This Oxy team gave the Oxy superfans so many great memories from this season and 2023  is a year that will be remembered by the Oxy superfans and each player for many years to come.
