Thompson Scores 41, Oxy Beats Bethesda

Los Angeles, CA — Women's basketball played against Bethesda University in Rush Gym on Tuesday night. 

The game started off close as the game was tied at 10 with 4 minutes left to play in the 1st quarter. Oxy would go on a 6-0 run that included Dominique Cabading and Toni Thompson making layups and then Thompson added two more points at the free throw line. 

The Tigers would score 10 points without Bethesda responding to go up 20-10. Oxy kept the momentum going into the 2nd quarter as Michelle Lagunas-Monroy and Ainsley Shelsta both made layups on back to back Oxy possessions to increase the lead to 24-11. 

Thompson and Shelsta combined for 16 of Oxy's 21 2nd quarter points to lead Oxy to a 41-31 lead at halftime. Gabriela Etopio would start the 3rd quarter with a made layup for the Tigers. Oxy was able to play strong defense to limit Bethesda's scoring while putting good offensive possessions together and increase the lead to 21 when Dominique Cabading hit a three pointer with 7 minutes left in the 2rd quarter. 

The lead was 19 at the end of the 3rd quarter as Oxy first year Nicole Vanegas made a layup right as the clock expired to end the quarter. Toni Thompson would take over to start the 4th quarter as she scored Oxy's first 4 made baskets of the quarter. 

The Tigers would hold on to a big lead for the remainder of the game and would win by a score of 96-73. Thompson had an unbelievable game for Oxy, scoring 41 points on offense while making 17 of 24 shots taken to shoot 70.8% from the field. 

Thompson also had 9 rebounds and 3 steals in the game. Ainsley Shelsta had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Dominique Cabading led Oxy with 4 assists and also scored 9 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. 

The Tigers will look to keep up their strong start to the season when they play their first conference game of the season against the Chapman Panthers at home on Wednesday, November 29th.
