Los Angeles, CA — Men's basketball continued their push to make the SCIAC Men's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday.
They played host to Cal Lutheran and the game was intense from the jump ball all the way to the end. Despite Andrew Waldman having a great 1st half, Cal Lu was able to jump out to a 10 point lead with 9 minutes to go before halftime.
Waldman continued his great play and brought the Tigers back to within 6 points when he made a 3-pointer with 2:30 left in the 1st half. After the Tigers closed the half strong, the score was 36-31 in favor of Cal Lutheran heading into the locker rooms.
Aiden Williams would immediately drain a 3-pointer out of the half to get the Tigers some momentum. Sydney Shipp followed with a 3 of his own and then Waldman made the next two Tiger baskets and Oxy had grabbed a 41-36 lead.
Cal Lu was staying close in the game but Waldman was determined to lead the Tigers as he continued to make basket after basket. With 11 minutes left in the half, Waldman would hit another 3-pointer to give Oxy a 60-50 lead.
It wasn't until less than 5 minutes were remaining that Cal Lu was able to cut the lead down to 5 points after a made 3. They then made two free throws and the lead was down to 3 points for Oxy. Anthony Hollerich responded with a jump shot to get the lead back to 5 points with 3 minutes left.
Williams then hit a huge jump shot with 1:17 left to give Oxy a 78-73 lead and Cal Lu was not able to make their shots to come back from that point and Oxy won by a score of 83-77. Waldman finished with a double double with 34 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists as well.
Hollerich also had 19 points and 3 3-pointers and Williams had 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Oxy will travel to Pomona to take on the Sagehens for their next game on Wednesday, February 8th.
