Los Angeles, CA — Oxy's men's soccer team played Whittier on the road for their 2nd SCIAC game of the season on Saturday night.Â
Oxy would come out fast with a header shot from Aiden Aley that forced a save from the Poet keeper. Oury Diane also had a header shot soon after but it sailed high over the goal.
Oxy was able to create offensive opportunities for themselves in the 1st half, getting off four more shots after the first two, with two of them forcing more saves from the Whittier goalie. The Tiger's defense was also playing well and limiting shots from Whittier.
The Poets were only able to get three shots off in the 1st half and only one was on goal, with Riley Nyhan coming up with the save to keep the game scoreless. The game would enter the half at a 0-0 tie with both teams playing well defensively.
In the 2nd half, Oxy came out strong and put together many scoring opportunities that would end with shots on goal. Five different times the Tigers would put a shot on goal and each time the Whittier keeper was able to come up with a big save to keep the game tied.
Whittier was able to get on the board first with a goal in before the 64th minute of the game when Lawrence Dydell was able to find the back of the net for the Poets. Oxy did not panic and kept their defense and offense strong to get more shot opportunities and keep the Poets from extending the lead.
The Tigers were ramping up their efforts as the game drew nearer to the end when Max Stanley would find himself free of any defenders and fire off a shot that would get past the Whittier goalie and tie the game with just about five minutes remaining.Â
Trying to get one more score to get the win, Oxy was playing strong and keeping the ball moving in their possession but Whitter would come up with a shot on goal but Nyhan came up with a huge save to keep the game tied and give Oxy another chance to score.Â
The Tigers would not waste the opportunity as they put together an offensive possession that would end with Christian Corcoran scoring the go-ahead goal with only 6 seconds remaining in regulation.Â
Oxy would win this one in thrilling fashion, coming from behind and scoring twice late in the game to secure a 2-1 win over the Poets to improve to 2-0 in SCIAC play and 5-1 overall.Â
Oxy will take on the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Wednesday, September 20th in Pomona as they look to get another win in SCIAC play.
