La Miranda, CA - In a thrilling baseball matchup, Occidental College emerged victorious against Biola University with a final score of 13-10 in the 2024 exhibition opener. The Tigers showcased their offensive prowess, particularly in the later innings, to secure the win.
The game got off to an exciting start as Occidental's Garrett Palm drove in Lou Martineau with a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning, taking an early 1-0 lead. However, Biola responded quickly in the bottom of the inning, with Wyatt Duncan doubling to left field, bringing in AJ Ortiz to tie the game at 1-1.
The 2nd inning saw Oxy regaining the lead as Ben Rutkin scored on a wild pitch, putting them up 2-1. Biola countered in the 2nd with Austin Carillo singling to left center, scoring Taylor Justus to tie the game once again.
Biola took the lead in the 3rd inning with Ortiz hitting a solo home run, making it 3-2. The Tigers responded in the 4th inning with Martineau's sacrifice bunt allowing Alex Henders to score, tying the game at 3-3. Jackson Short's double then brought in Henders, putting the Tigers ahead 4-3.
Oxy extended their lead in the 6th inning when Henders doubled to left center, scoring Tyler Kubo. However, Biola narrowed the gap in the 6th with an unearned run, making it 5-4.
The game reached a turning point in the 8th inning, where Occidental exploded offensively. Jackson Short's double brought in three runs, and subsequent hits by Sean Elsee, Mason Olson, and Tommy Woods extended the lead to 12-4.
