Men's soccer draws with Caltech

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Men's soccer drew a 1-1 tie to Caltech to finish off an eventful homecoming and hall of fame evening in Eagle Rock on Saturday, October 19.

Before the game, the Tigers honored the eight seniors in the program, then at halftime, Occidental Athletics recognized the Hall of Fame Class of 2024, being officially inducted on Sunday, October 20.

Down to the pitch, the Tigers and Beavers held each other scoreless through the first half, with both teams playing some stellar defense. The tigers put together a more impressive offensive half with eight shots to the Beavers' three.

In the second half, Caltech got on the board first in the 74th. Leading goal scorer in the SCIAC, Etienne Casanova, was on the assisting end of an impressive header goal off a corner to put the Beavers ahead.

Twelve minutes later, a crucial Beaver handball in the box resulted in a penalty opportunity for senior Oury Diane. Diane parked it in the bottom left corner of the goal, evening the game back up at one.

The final five minutes saw back-and-forth attacks with the Tigers breaking through the center of the box, they leaked too far in front of the defender and got called offsides. With under a minute to go, Caltech had an empty net opportunity as Riley Nyhan rushed out from the goal to punch a ball out of the box, but an attacking Beaver got a shot off. It was the Tiger defense that salvaged the tie.

The tie plays big implications in the SCIAC standings with Redlands winning today. The Bulldogs picked up three points on the pack and leapt into first. Oxy dropped down to third in the process. They're tied with CMS in second, but the Stags hold the tiebreaker with a victory on October 16.

The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday against the Stags with a playoff push on the line.
